The 1st of May or Labour Day is usually a day of rest for all of the working population. But for us FGA-ians, it’s a day where we come together as a church to celebrate God, have a great fellowship, have fun as a family and more importantly beat your opponent in whichever game that you are playing.
My day started out at 6.30am in the morning as I wake up and prepare for the day ahead. Not that I’m playing anyway but to come and support my friends who are playing and be part of this wonderful event. The event was held at the Panasonic Stadium in Shah Alam and some of the events started as early as 8am. I managed to reach the venue at 8am, a time which I planned to arrive at, thinking that I would be among the early birds to arrive. But to my amazement, when I arrived, the parking inside the venue was already full! Imagine that, 8am, FULL!
There were many sports and games being played on that very day. Among them are Tennis, Net Ball, Football, Swimming, Running, Table Tennis, Badminton etc. There were also games stalls set up for young children and kids to play in. As you can imagine, the church really did an amazing job in organizing a myriad of events to ensure everyone gets to participate in, one way or another.
Besides sports and games in which many church members participated in, there were also food stalls. FOOD! Yummylicious glorious food which was prepared by some of the Home Fellowships.
And I tell you, these women sure can cook! Among the yummylicious food on offer were Nasi Lemaks, Spaghettis, Fried Rice, Fried Noodles etc. I also remembered one stall selling Hainanese Coffee which is quite authentic and served in a cup like those in the coffee shops, not some white Styrofoam cup.
To my surprise there was also a live band at the event, which added to the already joyous atmosphere. Since it’s my very first time going to the FGA family sports carnival, I really didn’t expect much. However, this has been an amazing experience for me. And also to see people in a different light, I didn’t know some of the people I know were so competitive when it comes to sports. And I also didn’t know some came really prepared, my friends who joined some of the games just came to play for fun and didn’t practice at all and was defeated in the first round itself! All in all, I could see that this event also bridges the generation gap as young and the not so old come to play together. It’s a chance for the church people to come and mingle together as people from different age groups, geographic location, and ministries are involved.
This is definitely a highlight in my calendar for years to come. It’s really an event for everyone, and if you miss this year’s one, come for the next! I’m sure you will not regret it!
